Your Keyword Intelligence Dashboard

The Keyword Research Overview is your starting point for any keyword analysis in Serpstat. Enter any keyword and instantly see its search volume, PPC competition, cost per click, and ranking difficulty — plus a preview of organic and paid keyword variations and the domains competing for it. Use it to quickly evaluate whether a keyword is worth pursuing before diving into deeper reports.

What you can achieve:

  • Evaluate keyword potential in seconds: See volume, difficulty, and CPC together in one view — without jumping between reports.

  • Discover related keyword variations: The organic and paid keyword previews surface semantically related terms you may not have considered.

  • Identify your real SERP competitors: See exactly which domains are fighting for this keyword — in both organic results and paid ads.

Getting Started

  1. Navigate to Keyword Research → Overview in the left sidebar.

  2. Select the search type: Keyword (to analyze a specific query) or URL/Domain depending on your goal.

  3. Enter your target keyword (e.g., running shoes) into the search bar.

  4. Select your target regional database (e.g., Google US) from the dropdown.

  5. Click Search. The Overview loads with all key metrics and keyword previews immediately.

  6. Click Show all in any panel to jump directly into the corresponding full report.

Key Metrics Explained

  1. Volume: Average monthly search frequency over the past year. A higher number means more potential traffic — but also more competition.

  2. Competition: Difficulty of ranking in paid search (PPC), expressed as a percentage from 0 to 100%. High competition means many advertisers are bidding on this keyword.

  3. CPC (Cost Per Click): The average price advertisers pay per click for this keyword in Google Ads. A high CPC signals strong commercial intent — useful even if you're focused on SEO.

  4. Keyword Difficulty (KD): How hard it is to reach the Top 10 organic results for this keyword, scored 0–100. For new or mid-authority sites, target keywords below KD 40.

  5. Organic Keywords panel: A preview of keyword variations that domains rank for organically — including synonyms, long-tail versions, and related queries. Click "Show all" to open the full Keywords Selection report.

  6. Paid Keywords panel: Keyword variations being used in active PPC campaigns. Use this to spot high-converting terms competitors are willing to pay for.

  7. Competitors in Organic Search: Domains currently ranking in the Top 20 for this keyword, ranked by visibility. A quick read on who owns the SERP.

Pro Tip: Qualify Keywords Before Going Deep

Before spending time on full keyword research, use the Overview as a quick filter to decide if a keyword deserves your attention.

  1. Check Volume — is there enough search demand to justify creating content?

  2. Check KD — is the difficulty realistic for your current domain authority?

  3. Check CPC — a high CPC confirms strong commercial intent, making it worth targeting even with lower volume.

  4. Glance at Competitors — if the top 5 positions are dominated by Amazon, Wikipedia, and major brands, the bar to rank is extremely high regardless of KD score.

  5. The goal: In under 30 seconds you can decide whether to keep digging or move on to the next keyword candidate.

⚠️ Important: Volume and CPC figures reflect averages across the selected regional database. Actual search demand and ad costs vary by seasonality, device, and targeting. Use these numbers for relative comparison between keywords — not for precise forecasting.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Why does a keyword show high volume but the organic keywords panel shows "No data"?
A: This can happen for very niche or newly trending queries that Serpstat hasn't fully indexed yet. Click Request more data — the database is typically updated within a week.

Q: What's the difference between Competition and Keyword Difficulty?
A: Competition measures difficulty in paid search (how many advertisers are bidding). Keyword Difficulty measures difficulty in organic search (how hard it is to rank in Top 10). A keyword can have high Competition but low KD — common for commercial terms with few strong organic players.

Q: The Overview shows competitors I don't recognize — are they really competing with me?
A: Yes — the competitors list is based on SERP rankings, not business category. A forum thread, a news article, or an aggregator page may outrank specialized sites for certain queries. This is valuable signal: it tells you what content format Google currently rewards for this keyword.

Q: Can I analyze a keyword in a language other than English?
A: Yes — simply select the appropriate regional database (e.g., Google DE for German, Google RU for Russian) before searching. All metrics will reflect that specific market.
