Find the Keywords Your Competitors Have That You Don't

The Keyword Gap report compares the organic keyword profiles of multiple domains side by side. It pinpoints every query where a competitor ranks in the Top 100 but your domain does not — turning competitive research into a direct content action list.

What you can achieve:

  • Close content gaps fast: Get a ready-made list of keywords your rivals rank for that you haven't targeted yet.

  • Prioritize by opportunity: Filter missing keywords by volume, difficulty, and position to find the highest-impact ones first.

  • Compare up to 5 domains at once: Stack your domain against multiple competitors in a single view to see the full competitive picture.

Getting Started

  1. Navigate to Site Analysis → Keyword Gap in the left sidebar.

  2. Enter your domain in the first field, then add 1–4 competitor domains in the fields below.

  3. Select your target regional database and click Search.

  4. Use the view tabs at the top of the table to switch between: All keywords, Missing (competitors rank, you don't), Weak (you rank lower than competitors), and Strong (you outrank all competitors).

  5. Apply filters (volume, keyword difficulty, position) to focus on the most actionable keywords.

Key Metrics Explained

  1. Missing keywords: Queries where all selected competitors rank in Top 100 but your domain doesn't appear at all. These are your highest-priority content gaps.

  2. Weak keywords: Queries where you rank, but lower than at least one competitor. Improving existing content here can yield quick wins.

  3. Strong keywords: Queries where you outrank all compared competitors. Monitor these to maintain your lead.

  4. Volume: Average monthly searches. Higher volume = more traffic potential if you rank.

  5. Keyword Difficulty (KD): How hard it is to rank in Top 10. For new or lower-authority sites, prioritize KD below 40.

Pro Tip: Build a Content Calendar from Keyword Gap

This workflow turns a Keyword Gap report into a ready-to-execute content plan in minutes.

  1. Switch to the Missing tab to focus on keywords you don't rank for at all.

  2. Filter by Volume > 500 and KD < 40 to find achievable, high-traffic opportunities.

  3. Export the filtered list as a CSV.

  4. The goal: Each keyword on this list represents a content piece your competitors have already validated. You have the roadmap — now you just need to execute.

⚠️ Important: Keyword Gap data is based on Serpstat's keyword database for the selected region. If a competitor ranks via a subdomain or subfolder, enter their specific subfolder (e.g., competitor.com/blog/) to get a more accurate gap analysis.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How many domains can I compare at once?
A: You can compare up to 5 domains simultaneously — your target domain plus up to 4 competitors.

Q: What's the difference between "Missing" and "Weak" keywords?
A: Missing = you have no ranking at all for that keyword. Weak = you do rank, but lower than at least one competitor. Both are opportunities, but Missing keywords represent content you haven't created yet.

Q: Can I analyze Keyword Gap at the subfolder or URL level?
A: Yes — enter a subfolder (e.g., example.com/blog/) instead of the root domain to scope the comparison to a specific section of the site.

Q: How do I find the best keywords to target first?
A: Use the Missing tab, then filter by high Volume and low Keyword Difficulty. Also look at keywords where 2 or more competitors rank — that signals proven demand in your niche.
