Understand Your Market's Competitive Landscape

The Market Research report gives you a macro view of your entire search niche. Instead of analyzing one competitor at a time, you see the whole market — which domains own the most keywords, how traffic is distributed, and where gaps exist that no one is fully capturing.

What you can achieve:

  • See the full competitive map: Understand how market share is distributed across all major players in your niche at a glance.

  • Find underserved topics: Identify keyword clusters where competition is low but search demand exists.

  • Benchmark your market position: See exactly where your domain stands relative to the total addressable keyword space in your category.

Getting Started

  1. Navigate to Site Analysis → Market Research in the left sidebar.

  2. Enter a domain that represents your niche (your own or a top competitor) and select your regional database.

  3. Click Search. The report builds a market overview centered around that domain's keyword space.

  4. Use the filters to focus on specific topic areas, traffic ranges, or competitor groups.

  5. Switch between chart view and table view to explore the data in the format most useful for your analysis.

Market Research — competitive landscape chart showing domain clusters by visibility

Key Metrics Explained

  1. Market Share (Visibility %): Each domain's share of the total visibility within the analyzed keyword set — who owns the most search real estate.

  2. Keyword overlap: How many keywords each domain shares with the analyzed domain — a direct measure of competitive intensity.

  3. Traffic distribution: How total estimated organic traffic is split across market participants.

  4. Niche leaders: Domains with the highest combined visibility and keyword count — the benchmarks to aim for.

Pro Tip: Find the Niche Leader Your Content Should Beat

Every niche has a few domains that own a disproportionate share of organic visibility. Identifying them shapes your entire content strategy.

  1. Sort the market table by Visibility descending — the top 3 domains are your primary benchmarks.

  2. Compare their keyword counts to yours. The gap = your growth ceiling.

  3. Click the top domain and go to its Top Pages report.

  4. The goal: Understanding why the market leader wins on specific topics lets you build a targeted counter-strategy, topic by topic.

⚠️ Important: Market Research analyzes the keyword space around the domain you enter. Choose a domain with broad coverage in your niche to get a representative market view. A very niche or new domain may produce a narrow market snapshot.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How is "market share" calculated in this report?
A: Market share is based on Visibility — the relative prominence of each domain across the shared keyword set. A domain with high visibility on high-volume keywords will show a larger share, even with fewer total keywords than a competitor.

Q: Can I use Market Research for a specific product category?
A: Yes — enter a domain that specializes in that category, or use a subfolder of a large domain (e.g., amazon.com/electronics/) to scope the analysis to that segment.

Q: How often does market data update?
A: Market Research data refreshes in sync with Serpstat's main keyword database — typically every 1–2 weeks for major regional databases.
